There is no better natural iodine supplement than Seagreens Iodine+ capsules. Each capsule contains 350µg naturally occurring iodine (twice the RDA), in a whole food form.

Whats more, Seagreens Iodine+ capsules also provide a comprehensive range of vitamins, minerals and trace elements, all synergistically combined in their natural state, easily absorbed by your body.

Why is it called Iodine Plus?

The + is that Seagreens® is also naturally rich in all the minerals and micronutrients needed for the proper transport and metabolism of iodine including selenium, tyrosine, zinc, copper, vitamins A, B2, B3, B6 and C. This is because the Seagreens® seaweed is an outstandingly balanced whole food.

One vegan capsule provides about 350µg of naturally chelated iodine (twice the RDA) plus the full micronutrient balance for healthy metabolism in a whole food with nothing added or extracted.

In Seagreens® Ascophyllum nodosum ‘kelp’ the organic iodine is easily absorbed, stable, naturally chelated and colloidal. As most iodine is from dairy and meat, this is ideal in vegan, vegetarian, allergy and intolerance diets.

The whole body and nervous system needs iodine, not just the thyroid, especially under stress and women more than men - any excess will simply be eliminated.

Why is Seagreens® iodine so important?

In Seagreens® the iodine is naturally bound to protein ions, so that as it travels through the body it remains stable and can be unbound¹ and used as and when the body has need of it. Iodine is one of the most important elements and a vital food for the thyroid gland, where most of our body's iodine is stored. The thyroid in turn regulates our hormone system, which controls all the key biological functions.

Dietary iodine deficiency

Iodine deficiency even in Britain may be more widespread than is currently realised because over-used soils and new artificial growing mediums may be deficient in the micronutrients like iodine. Thousands of people in Britain and elsewhere, suffer from hypo- (underactive) or hyper- (overactive) thyroid, both of which require a proper nutritional balance.

Iodine deficiency can also be attributed to a recent trend to avoid table salt (which is legally required to be fortified with added iodine). Natural sea salt is mineral rich but is low in iodine.

However, Seagreens Mineral Salt provides the minerals of sea salt together with the minerals and iodine of seaweed.

There is no single (or sure) diagnostic test, symptoms can vary widely, and diagnosis is difficult even for experienced clinicians.

Especially in mild cases, patients may go for years without diagnosis. In exceptional circumstances, the thyroid may be incapacitated, or cancerous in which case it may be removed.

In such cases additional iodine is normally inappropriate, but otherwise the additional iodine contributes to the normal production of thyroid hormones and normal thyroid function. There is no universal agreement on a maximum safe daily intake.

In the last 50 years, runner beans have lost 100% of their sodium, watercress 90% its copper, broccoli 75% its calcium. Levels of other important minerals including magnesium, iron, phosphorous and potassium have also plummeted² - Daily Mail, March 2001

What's in it

Iodine+ Capsules contain pure finely milled Seagreens® native wild Wrack seaweeds Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus vesiculosus whose composition and health benefits Seagreens has studied and documented for over two decades. Vegetable capsules. Nothing added or extracted. Non-allergenic.

What it does

Iodine contributes to the normal production of thyroid hormones, normal thyroid function, nervous system and cognitive function, the normal growth of childrn, normal energy-yielding metabolism, and the maintenance of normal skin. Plus each capsule contains natural vitamins such as B9 and B12, minerals such as magnesium, selenium and zinc - all the other nutrients the body needs for the effective transport and metabolism of iodine - and contributes a small balance of micronutrients to a normal daily diet. Independent thyroid iodine research on Seagreens® Ascophyllum was published in the British Journal of Nutrition in 2014. This blend of two Seagreens® native wild Wrack species combines the benefits of thyroid iodine research, high antioxidants and polyphenols, and balanced iodine.

How to use

For sufficiency in iodine, wherever there is a known deficiency, one capsule each morning (500mg or 0.02oz), or the capsule may be emptied into any food or cold drink, simply by pulling apart. For children, or merely to 'top up' daily iodine, use Iodine Lite+ Capsules. All Seagreens® nutrition products contain varying levels of natural iodine. The uptake of iodine in the body* has been shown to be approximately 1/3rd of intake, illustrated in the following table. Safe for permanent daily use.

Provenance

British Isles and Nordic region. The best seaweed species are found in different locations. Seagreens has developed 5 food certified remote harvesting locations and production facilities in England, Iceland, Ireland, Norway and Scotland.

Appropriate levels of intake

Main iodine sources in European diets are dairy products, meat and eggs, so iodine is especially important for vegans and vegetarians. Goitrogens in vegetables of the cabbage family may also reduce absorption of iodine. Surveys of British adults show mean daily intakes of about 200µg per person per day from a healthy¹ diet, less for women, and inadequate average intakes of about 80µg per day in vegans.

³Edible seaweeds...could be a useful source for vegans if used in moderation² - Manual of Nutrition (MAFF - Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries & Food, 1995).

The UK Government recommend that the safe upper intake should not exceed 1,000µg (1mg) per adult over the age of 10 per day - or 17µg (0.017mg) per kilogram (1991).

The UK Health Food Manufacturers¹ Association has adopted a voluntary maximum for nutritional supplements of 500µg (0.5mg) iodine per daily dose. This approximates to an intake of about 750µg (0.75mg) per day if the existing population average daily intake is added to the HFMA figure.

A pure, natural, assimilable source of Iodine

Iodine is one of the most important elements and a vital food for the thyroid gland, where most of our body's iodine is stored. The thyroid in turn regulates our hormone system, which controls all the key biological functions.

Thyroid hormones, with iodine as an essential ingredient, control normal growth and development, and many other functions including immunity and fertility. Thyroxine and triiodothyromine are necessary for metabolic rate, cellular metabolism, and the integrity of connective tissue.

During the first 3 months of pregnancy iodine is particularly important to the fetus for development of the nervous system.

In the UK, 76% of school aged girls and 66% of adult women are iodine deficient**

Seagreens® is authorised by the European Food Standards Agency to claim the following health benefits:

  • Iodine contributes to the normal production of thyroid hormones and normal thyroid function
  • Iodine contributes to the normal growth of children
  • Iodine contributes to normal cognitive function
  • Iodine contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism
  • Iodine contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system
  • Iodine contributes to the maintenance of normal skin

Customer Reviews of Seagreens® Iodine+ Capsules

Highly recommended

I have been managing an under active thyroid for a few years now and I stopped taking the seagreens seaweed earlier this year and my reading was 21!!!!

After only 3.5 months on 2 tablets a day the reading is at 6.4. - what a difference and even the nurse and doctor are astounded.

I'm hoping it will go back to normal at some point with the magic of plant power...

Update regarding seagreens and under active thyroid

This is my third review on the subject, but if it helps anyone in the same position I would be delighted. My last review , was over 3 years ago and I have been taking Seagreens Iodine Plus for over 4 years now.

This time last year my U.A.T reading went up quite a bit, and I was very worried I would at last have to resort to artificial thyroid medication. My doctor gave me the chance to try to get it down to borderline again so I contacted Seagreens to ask if I could take 2 tablets a day rather than one. They said it was fine to do that and consequently after 3 months my level came back to borderline again.

It has remained there and I am hoping it will continue to do so, although I have to have regular blood tests every three to six months.

I have HALVED my thyroid medication intake

Just had to register my thanks - after being on your Iodine+ capsules for a year, I have HALVED my artificial thyroid hormone medication intake from the GP. I have reduced from 150mcg to 75mcg! Please continue your good work.

Keeping Under-Active Thyroid under control naturally

I have been taking Seagreens Iodine+ Capsules for a year along with other Vitamins and Minerals [B 50 Complex, Vit C, Vit E, Selenium, Magnesium and Zinc] also using a non Flouride toothpaste and not eating Cruciferous Vegetables [Cabbage, Brocolli, Sprouts and Cauliflower]. This has been under doctor's supervision who knew I didn't want to take artificial thyroid medication for life, and my Under-Active Thyroid reading has come down from 7.00 to 4.66[normal] I am really delighted.

Positive results from seagreens

I was told five years ago that I was borderline underactive thyriod [reading 5 ]. I started taking ordinary kelp as I did not want to have to go onto artificial thryroid hormone medication for life.

Three months ago I had to have another blood test and my doctor said I had gone up to a reading of 7. I told her I still wanted to try and beat this the natural way so I started taking seagreens iodine. I also had free advice from a nutritionist at 'natures best' who advised me to take vitamins b,c,and e. I also stopped eating 'cruciferous' veg [brocali, cabbage, cauli, and sprouts] which I read should be avoided with underactive thyroid.

My doctor sent for me to have another blood test after a further three months and I was delighted to say I had gone down to a reading of 5.9. I feel really positive now I can help myself with natural products.
